Matthew Mason

At a special meeting on March 29, the Goochland County School Board approved the
appointment of Mr. Matthew Mason as principal of Goochland Middle School effective July 1, 2022. Mason previously served as assistant principal of Goochland High School in 2016-2017 and returns to GCPS after serving as principal of Sandusky Middle School in Lynchburg City Public Schools. Mason’s experience prior to his leadership roles includes middle and high school teaching and coaching in the metro-Richmond area.

Mason is a native of central Virginia and is excited about returning to the area with his wife, Tawana, and children, Hannah and Taylor. “To have the opportunity to return to GCPS as the principal of Goochland Middle is special for me and my family,” Mason said. “Goochland continues to be a division and community known for its outstanding schools, and I look forward to leading the GMS team and families toward maximizing our potential each day.” Mason’s priority is to build relationships with GMS families, students, faculty, and staff this summer as he plans for continued engagement, innovation, and success for all students.

Mason’s appointment as principal comes after a months-long search process that included significant stakeholder input and opportunities for interactions with GMS and division staff. Mason will be engaged during his transition from Lynchburg to Goochland in the months ahead, while Mrs. Rachel Wilborn continues to serve as interim principal for the remainder of the school year.
