Dr. Michael Cromartie

At a special meeting tonight, the Goochland County School Board unanimously selected Michael Cromartie, Ed.D., as the division’s new Superintendent.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Cromartie to Goochland and firmly believe he is the right person to lead this division for years to come,” Board Chair Sandra Barefoot-Reid said. “The Board’s enthusiastic support of his selection shows how confident we are that his skills, experience, and character make him a great fit for our culture.”

“Goochland County’s schools have long been regarded among the best in the state,” Cromartie said. “I am eager to advance those successes, and I want to thank each Goochland County School Board member for trusting me to lead the division.”

Cromartie’s current position is as Chief Schools Officer for Portsmouth Public Schools. He started his career in education as a high school English teacher and has served public school divisions as an assistant principal, principal, director, and Deputy Superintendent. He earned his bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the College of William & Mary.

As an adjunct professor with the Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University, Cromartie was honored by his students and colleagues as the recipient of the 2018 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. Cromartie has served as a member of the Executive Board of Directors for Communities in Schools of Hampton Roads, a member of the Hampton Roads Committee of 200+ Men, and a contributing member to the Smithsonian National Museum
of African American History and Culture.

“I am both delighted and humbled to be selected as the next superintendent of Goochland County’s schools, and my family and I are extremely excited to join the Goochland community,” Cromartie said. His wife, Elizabeth, is an elementary school principal, and they have four daughters.

“We look forward to working with Dr. Cromartie to continue our division’s tradition of excellence and our focus on maximizing the potential of every learner,” Barefoot-Reid said. “He clearly epitomizes our Core Values, and we know he will positively impact our community’s schools.”
