Insurance and Benefits

Goochland County Public Schools offers a comprehensive health insurance program through Anthem Local Choice. The program bundles medical, dental, and vision insurance into one monthly premium. The medical and vision coverage is administered by Anthem Local Choice and the dental coverage is through Delta Dental of Virginia.

Three plans are offered to eligible employees; Key Advantage 250 – Summary of Benefits and CoverageKey Advantage 500 – Summary of Benefits and Coverage and a High Deductible Health Plan- Summary of Benefits and Coverage that is paired with a health savings account. For most of the plans offered, the division covers at least 60% of the total premium. Our health benefits premium is among the most competitive in the region.

Employees must complete the Anthem Local Choice Enrollment Form and Payroll Deduction Form to enroll or make changes to their health insurance coverage. Changes outside of the open enrollment period are only permitted as a result of a Qualifying Mid-Year Event.

Voluntary Benefits

GCPS offers a variety of supplemental insurance products to eligible employees, and in some cases, their dependents. While these benefits are group sponsored, the division does not contribute to the cost of the plans. The division currently offers the following types of supplemental coverage.

  • Short Term Disability

  • Critical Care Insurance

  • Off-the-job Accident Insurance

  • Whole Life Insurance

Flexible Spending Accounts

The division offers medical flexible spending and dependent flexible spending account to eligible employees through Chard-Snyder. Flexible spending accounts allow employees set aside a portion of their earnings (pre-tax) to pay for qualifying medical and/or dependent care expenses.

Employee Leave

Eligible employees earn leave based on employment status and years of service. Please refer to School Board policy GCBD for specific information.

Family Medical Leave (FMLA)

GCPS employees with at least one year of service and who work at least 1,250 hours per year may qualify for Family Medical Leave in accordance with School Board Policy GCBE 

Sick Leave Bank

The Sick Leave Bank provides additional sick leave days to members of the Bank in the event of catastrophic illness, surgery, temporary disability, or injury. Membership in the Sick Leave Bank is voluntary and open to all full-time and part-time employees who earn sick leave and are not enrolled as members of the VRS Hybrid Retirement plan.

Virginia Retirement System

The Division’s retirement plan is administered by the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). Eligible employees are enrolled in a VRS plan based on criteria developed and administered by VRS. Eligible employees are required to contribute 5% of their pay to VRS, while the division covers the remaining 95%. Specific plan and benefit information can be found on the VRS website.

Deferred Compensation

All full-time, part-time, and temporary GCPS employees are eligible to enroll in any of our deferred compensation plans. To qualify for payroll deduction employees must select a vendor from the approved GCPS 403b Provider List.
