Working in Goochland—Worth the Drive

What makes Goochland a great place to work?

Some of our Teacher Perspectives on Working in Goochland County

When I came to Goochland, I was looking for my forever home. I chose to live in Richmond and had several options and opportunities but none of them surpassed what I found at Goochland County Schools. This is where I found strategic vision, passion for doing what is right, community support, and the encouragement to grow professionally while being surrounded by colleagues who are committed to the profession of teaching.

As a special education teacher, I knew my job would require an alliance with teachers, students and parents. The building of these relationships was fostered by Goochland’s commitment to maximize the potential of every learner. I always felt that the designation of learning disabled never implied that they were learning incapable. I have experienced the end results of this in the eyes of a student who achieved pass advanced on a math SOL test when he himself expected to be inferior to his peers yet out performed them. Goochland’s commitment to 21st Century skills has continued to provide my students with opportunities that, at one time, were far out of reach to a student with a disability.

I could not have done this if I had not been afforded every opportunity to learn, grow, and expand my capabilities as an educator. I am proud to be a Goochland County educator and fulfilled in the comfort that I am at home.

I love coming to work every day because of the students at Goochland High School. I truly look forward to my daily interactions with them both in the classroom and out in the hallways. There is something unique about the students at Goochland that both energizes and challenges me to be an effective instructor for them. To have students engaged in their school academically and socially has made Goochland County such a rewarding place to work at.

During my four years with Goochland County Public Schools, I can say that I feel appreciated and validated as a teacher. I am allowed to teach and do what I feel is best to help my students learn the concepts. When I need support, it is down the hall or an e-mail away. The administration supports the teachers. We all have the same goal; which is to do the very best for our students.
